Kinnairds Wetland

Kinnairds Wetland Phone: (03) 5862 3458

Kinnairds Wetland is a 93 ha wetland adjoining the Broken Creek close to the township of Numurkah in Northern Victoria.

The wetland was modified as part of the Muckatah Surface Water Management Scheme. This provides major regional drainage benefits for a large area of irrigated agriculture in the Muckatah Catchment. The works utilise the wetland as a retardation basin and filtering system for water quality while enhancing the wetland values.

A Recreation Management Plan has been developed as a joint project between Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, Goulburn-Murray Water, Moira Shire, Department of Sustainable Environment (formerly DNRE) and several community based groups at Numurkah.

Walking tracks, board walks, bird hides and picnic shelters have been constructed.

The vegetation is characterised by River Red Gum regrowth (from recent floods) and mature River Red Gum Trees, estimated to be more than 300 years old. Spike-sedge, water milfoil and giant rush abound the lagoons.

The site is notable as a breeding ground for royal spoonbills, little pied cormorants, wading birds and many species of ducks. Wedge-tailed eagles nest in a large redgum tree, and a variety of migratory species use the area as a feeding ground.

Special notes:As this is an environmentally sensitive site in a floodplain
* There are no toilets on site.
* Dogs are not permitted.
* Please remember to take all rubbish home with you.
